About Study Permits
Most foreign nationals need a study permit to attend a designated learning institution (DLI) in Canada. The permit is tied to the school and program, allows most full-time post-secondary students to work part-time off campus, and — for eligible programs — leads to a post-graduation work permit and a realistic route to permanent residence.
Study permits became harder to get in 2024 and 2025. Canada capped the number of new permits, most applicants now need a provincial or territorial attestation letter from the province where they will study, the financial requirement was raised, and the Student Direct Stream was closed. Refusal rates for some countries and some colleges are high. A permit application is now a persuasive document, not a form.
We prepare study permits for families sending children to Canadian primary and secondary schools, for college and university students, and for students already in Canada who need to extend, change schools or switch to a work permit.
Who it is for
- Parents who want their children in Canadian elementary or secondary schools, often with one parent accompanying them.
- College and university applicants, including those who were refused once and need a stronger second application.
- Students in Canada who need an extension, a change of institution or a change of conditions.
- Graduates applying for the post-graduation work permit within 180 days of completing their program.
Requirements at a glance
- A letter of acceptance from a designated learning institution and, for most post-secondary applicants, a provincial or territorial attestation letter.
- Proof of funds for the first year — tuition, living costs and return transport — at the level IRCC sets and updates.
- A clean record, a medical examination where required, and a credible study plan that shows the program makes sense for you.
- Ties to your home country or a clear immigration intention that the officer can accept (dual intent is lawful but must be handled carefully).
- For Quebec: a Certificat d'acceptation du Québec (CAQ) before the permit.
How FRBD helps
- Program and school selection with the work-permit and permanent-residence rules in mind, not just admission.
- The acceptance letter, attestation letter and financial documentation, organized the way officers expect.
- A study plan and cover letter that answer the questions a refusal would raise.
- Extensions, changes of school and the post-graduation work permit.
- Refused permits: we read the officer's notes and decide between a new application and a Judicial Review.
Rules verified on the IRCC website on November 2, 2026. Cap allocations and provincial attestation rules change each year.

Questions about Study Permits
Full-time post-secondary students with an eligible study permit may work off campus up to 24 hours a week during the academic session and full-time during scheduled breaks, without a separate work permit. The limit was changed from 20 to 24 hours in November 2024.
IRCC sets a minimum for living expenses on top of first-year tuition and transport, and it has risen twice since 2024. We give you the current figure at the assessment stage and show you how to document it so the funds are accepted.
No. IRCC ended the Student Direct Stream and the Nigeria Student Express in November 2024. All applicants now use the regular study permit process.
It depends on the reasons. Weak finances or an unconvincing study plan are usually fixed with a stronger second application. An officer who ignored your evidence or applied the wrong test is a Judicial Review case. We tell you which one you have.
