About Work Permits
A work permit lets a foreign national work in Canada for a set employer or, with an open permit, for almost any employer. Canada issues several hundred thousand each year, and for most of our clients the permit is a step toward permanent residence rather than the end of the road.
There are two families of permits. Employer-specific permits under the Temporary Foreign Worker Program need a positive Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA), where the employer proves no Canadian was available. Permits under the International Mobility Program are LMIA-exempt: intra-company transfers, trade-agreement professionals under CUSMA and CETA, entrepreneurs and self-employed people who can show a significant benefit to Canada, and a long list of other exemptions. Open permits — post-graduation, spousal and bridging — are not tied to one employer at all.
Since November 3, 2026, a job offer in a high-wage occupation also earns Express Entry points with no LMIA. We plan the permit and the permanent residence application together so that one supports the other.
Who it is for
- Employers in Canada who have found the right foreign candidate and need the permit done properly and quickly.
- Professionals transferred to a Canadian branch or subsidiary of their employer (intra-company transfer).
- Graduates of Canadian institutions applying for a post-graduation work permit, and spouses of skilled workers and students.
- Workers already in Canada whose permit is about to expire, or has expired, and who need an extension or restoration.
- Business owners buying or starting a Canadian business under an owner-operator or significant-benefit exemption.
Requirements at a glance
- A genuine job offer from a Canadian employer (for employer-specific permits) and, where required, a positive LMIA.
- For LMIA-exempt permits: the employer's offer of employment filed through the Employer Portal and proof that the exemption applies.
- Post-graduation work permit: a completed eligible program at a designated learning institution, applied for within 180 days of the final marks; the permit runs from eight months to three years.
- Spousal open work permit: a spouse or partner working in an eligible occupation or studying in an eligible program.
- Admissibility: no unresolved criminal or medical inadmissibility, and a valid passport.
How FRBD helps
- Permit strategy: LMIA or exemption, employer-specific or open, and how it feeds your permanent residence file.
- The LMIA application for the employer — advertising, wage compliance, transition plans — and the work permit that follows.
- Intra-company transfer and trade-agreement permits for multinational employers.
- Extensions, changes of conditions and restoration of status within the 90-day window.
- Refused permits: review of the officer's notes and, where justified, reconsideration or Judicial Review.
Rules verified on the IRCC website on November 2, 2026. LMIA processing and refusal rates vary by stream and by employer; we review the employer’s position before any application is filed.

Questions about Work Permits
Only for permits under the Temporary Foreign Worker Program. Intra-company transfers, CUSMA and CETA professionals, significant-benefit entrepreneurs, post-graduation and spousal permits, and many other categories are exempt. We confirm the exemption before anyone pays an LMIA fee.
No. Since November 3, 2026 a job offer in a high-wage occupation earns Comprehensive Ranking System points without an LMIA, and an LMIA no longer adds anything. The job must still be genuine and the occupation must be on IRCC’s high-wage list.
Apply for the extension before the expiry date. You keep your status and may keep working while the extension is processed. If the permit has already expired, you have 90 days to apply for restoration — and you cannot work until it is approved. Contact us before the deadline, not after.
In most skilled cases, yes. Spouses of workers in eligible occupations can apply for an open work permit, and children can study in Canada. The rules for family open work permits were tightened in 2025, so we check your occupation and permit type first.
