About Start-Up Visa
Canada’s Start-Up Visa gives permanent residence to founders whose business is backed by a designated venture capital fund, angel group or incubator. For the past five years it has been the centre of Farbod Tahriri’s practice, which is why the firm is known for it.
The program is now paused. IRCC stopped accepting new applications after June 30, 2026 — only founders holding a 2025 commitment certificate could apply by that date — and the page is marked closed to all other applications. What has not stopped is the work on the thousands of files already in the queue: progress-report requests, additional-document requests, procedural fairness letters, work permit extensions and, where a file is refused, Judicial Review.
If you are inside the program, this is where we add the most value. If you are not, we will tell you plainly and look at the provincial entrepreneur streams and other business routes instead.
Who it is for
- Start-Up Visa applicants and their essential team members whose applications are in process.
- Founders who received a progress-report request or a procedural fairness letter from IRCC.
- Designated-organization-backed teams that need help with business development, financials or prototyping milestones.
- Entrepreneurs who missed the Start-Up Visa and want a realistic alternative: provincial entrepreneur streams, intra-company transfers or an owner-operator work permit.
Requirements at a glance
- A letter of support or commitment certificate from a designated organization (for files already submitted).
- Language: CLB 5 in English or French in all four abilities.
- Settlement funds for your family size and an active, essential role in the business.
- For progress reports: evidence of the milestones in your business plan — incorporation, operations in Canada, hiring, product development, funding.
- New applications: not accepted since June 30, 2026 — we monitor IRCC for any reopening.
How FRBD helps
- Progress reports and responses to IRCC requests, written with your business plan, financials and evidence in hand.
- Business development support: plan updates, patents, prototyping, licensing and hiring milestones that officers look for.
- Work permit applications and extensions for founders and essential staff while the file is processed.
- Procedural fairness responses and, if the application is refused, Judicial Review before the Federal Court.
- An honest alternative-route assessment for founders who cannot use the program.
Program status checked on the IRCC Start-Up Visa page on November 2, 2026 (page updated July 21, 2026).

Questions about Start-Up Visa
Not at the moment. IRCC paused the program; the last window closed on June 30, 2026 and was open only to applicants with a 2025 commitment certificate. Files already submitted continue to be processed. If the program reopens we will know the same day — fill in the assessment and we will keep your details on file.
Yes. This is exactly the work we do: updating the business plan, documenting progress on each milestone, financial statements, patents, prototypes, medical or professional licensing, and the narrative that ties it together. Contact us as early as you can — innovation takes time and the deadlines are short.
We review the refusal reasons within days. Where the officer made a reviewable error — ignored evidence, misread the business plan, breached fairness — we file for leave and Judicial Review at the Federal Court. The deadline is 15 days if the decision was made inside Canada and 60 days if outside.
We work with founders. Where a file needs a designated organization’s updated support or a replacement letter, we coordinate with them on your behalf, but we do not sell places in incubators.
A Message From The Founder
“My word is everything, and if you are my client, I will deliver. I don’t tell you what you want to hear — I tell you the truth.” – Farbod Tahriri
