About Family Sponsorship
Canadian citizens and permanent residents can sponsor a spouse, common-law or conjugal partner, dependent children and — when the program is open — parents and grandparents for permanent residence. The sponsor signs an undertaking to support the family member for a set number of years, and IRCC assesses both the sponsor’s eligibility and the genuineness of the relationship.
Spousal sponsorship is the largest family stream and the one where files go wrong most often: a relationship the officer does not find genuine, a sponsor who is ineligible because of a previous undertaking or a bankruptcy, or an applicant who is inadmissible. Processing is typically twelve months or more, and an interview or a procedural fairness letter can double that.
The Parents and Grandparents Program is paused: on July 15, 2026 IRCC stopped accepting interest-to-sponsor forms and issuing invitations until further notice, while continuing to process applications already in the system. For most families the Super Visa is the working alternative, and we prepare those too.
Who it is for
- Spouses and partners, in Canada or abroad, including couples with a complicated immigration history.
- Parents sponsoring dependent children under 22 (or older children who depend on them because of a physical or mental condition), including adopted children.
- Sponsors who were invited under a previous Parents and Grandparents intake and need the application completed.
- Families whose first application was refused or who received a procedural fairness letter about the relationship.
Requirements at a glance
- Sponsor: 18 or older, a Canadian citizen or permanent resident living in Canada (or a citizen planning to return), not bankrupt, not in default of a previous undertaking or support order.
- Spouse or partner: a legally valid marriage, twelve months of cohabitation for common-law partners, or a conjugal relationship where marriage or cohabitation was impossible.
- Parents and grandparents (when open): the sponsor must meet the minimum necessary income — low-income cut-off plus 30 percent — in each of the three previous tax years; the undertaking is 20 years (10 in Quebec).
- Dependent children: unmarried and under 22, with proof of parentage or adoption.
- Medical examination, police certificates and admissibility for the sponsored family member.
How FRBD helps
- Eligibility review of both sponsor and applicant before anything is filed.
- Relationship evidence that holds up: history, communication, finances, cohabitation and the statutory declaration.
- Inland applications with the spousal open work permit, or outland applications where that is faster or necessary.
- Responses to procedural fairness letters and interview preparation.
- Appeals to the Immigration Appeal Division and Judicial Review where a sponsorship is refused.
Program status and income rules verified on the IRCC website on November 2, 2026. The latest minimum necessary income table is for the 2025 intake (tax years 2024, 2023 and 2022).

Questions about Family Sponsorship
No new sponsorships are being accepted. IRCC paused the Parents and Grandparents Program on July 15, 2026 — no interest-to-sponsor forms and no invitations until further notice. Applications already submitted continue. The Super Visa lets parents stay for up to five years per visit and is the route we recommend in the meantime.
If your spouse is in Canada with status, an inland application lets them apply for an open work permit while waiting, but they should not leave Canada for long periods. An outland application allows travel and is sometimes processed faster. We decide case by case.
Plan for about twelve months from a complete application, longer if IRCC asks for an interview or sends a procedural fairness letter. Incomplete or poorly documented files are returned, which restarts the clock.
A refused outland sponsorship can usually be appealed to the Immigration Appeal Division within 30 days; an inland refusal goes to Judicial Review within 15 days. Our in-house legal team handles both. The worst option is to do nothing and reapply with the same evidence.
